Getting Sweaty With the Vixen Workout

I visit the gym so infrequently, I could probably write off my monthly membership as a charitable donation. But when I received an invitation to a Vixen Workout class—and the instructor was pictured wearing a shirt that said “twerk”—the decision was obvious. I had to attend.
Striptease classes, pole-dancing classes, and whatever other pseudo-sultry workouts you can imagine, the results are always the same: I feel totally unsexy, marginally sore, and decidedly underwhelmed. And when Vixen Workout founder Janet Jones had us start the class hooting, moaning, bending, and snapping, I was sure this gimmick would be similar. Fast-forward 60 minutes to my drenched shirt and quivering legs (which are still sore three days later). The Vixen Workout officially kicked my ass in the best way possible. There was a lot of thrusting and dipping, but surprisingly, instead of feeling like I was learning a cheesy exotic chair dance for my boyfriend, I felt like I was just dancing and sweating to Beyoncé. I caught up with Jones after the class to find out more:
What inspired you to start Vixen Workout?
“I was a professional dancer, but I decided to give all that up, because at 26, I felt like I wanted to become an adult. To me, that meant having a husband, babies, a corporate job. I was miserable. Then I got laid off, so I started choreographing again. I knew I wanted to create a fitness class—like a girls’ night out where women can let loose. They can do something for themselves. It’s fun, and it kind of helps them get their sexy back.”
How do you come up with the routines?
“It makes no sense, but I just choreograph in my kitchen. It’s where I come up with the best ideas. And I usually test it out in my class. If they react well to it, I’ll keep it going. If they hate it, then I’ll just scrap it. I have a total of 72 routines in the repertoire.”
Your makeup didn’t budge the entire class. How do you keep everything in place?
“I always put a makeup primer on. I’m in love with the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base. And then I do my makeup and spray on the Make It Last Prime and Set Spray from Victoria’s Secret. I was actually in there buying underwear one day, and it was just there in a bin. I thought, OK let me try it out, not thinking that it was going to work. And it really sets it.”
5 methods to combat hair loss after chemotherapy

When a person undergoes cancer treatment, they not only endure a lot physically, but also on a mental and psychological level. Not to mention, the physical changes that it brings along. Several of the chemotherapy drugs used during the treatment of cancer cause hair fall. This is because chemotherapy drugs work by attacking the actively dividing cancer cells. But they also attack other actively growing cells in your body like that in the hair follicle. These drugs cause hair thinning, hair fall or complete baldness depending on the type of the drug, the dosage, duration etc. However, once the chemotherapy sessions are over, hair starts to grow back in a few months. But with radiotherapy, chances are that the hair loss may be permanent or patchy.
It is a very distressing phase when one is battling with cancer and also lose their hair which is strongly associated with one’s self-image and beauty. Though strong support from family and friends, and counselling can help ease this phase, there are also certain options available for such survivors.
Some people opt for wigs during the course of the treatment. Some shave their head or go bald as a symbol of their fight against cancer. Here are a few more possibilities:
Scalp ice caps: These are caps that are lined with a gel that is usually refrigerated and chilled. This is applied to the scalp during chemotherapy so that blood flow to the scalp is sluggish and chemotherapy drugs do not actively flow there. This in turn prevents hair fall. But it may not be available in all hospitals so remember to check with your doctor. The cap is put on the scalp 40-50 minutes before the chemotherapy is given.

Hair replacement: It is a type of a high-end hair toupee. A mesh base is first designed after taking the dimensions of the head and it is colour coordinated to the skin tone. Human hair is then tied to this mesh with some special knots in a way that it appears like hair is growing out of the mesh base. This base is then fitted to the head.
Hair transplantation: If the hair thinning seems permanent or if there are patchy areas of hair loss after finishing the treatment, hair transplant may also be a solution. There are 2 types — FUT where a strip of scalp is removed from the back of the head and the hair grafts are dissected out and implanted or there is the FUE method where individual grafts are removed with the help of an FUE motor and implanted.
Minoxidil: It may not help during the process of chemotherapy but it helps to grow hair back quicker after finishing chemotherapy. Used for both men and women, it is a solution that is applied directly to the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles. It works best on the crown area compared to the frontal region. However, one needs to be very careful while applying it since application to the face or neck skin can cause unwanted hair growth in those areas! And you may have to continue using it for a really long time since stopping the usage has often been linked to increased hair loss.
Finasteride: Finasteride also helps by promoting hair growth after chemotherapy. It is a pill that blocks the action of natural hormones in scalp hair and reduces hair loss. Approved for use in only men with androgenic hair loss, this drug is found to be safe in post menopausal women.
Haircare: Though these methods will help, one also needs to take care of their hair to ensure better growth. Therefore, gentle treatment of the hair must commence immediately. Use mild shampoo, brush less vigorously, avoid chemical treatments like perming, straightening, colouring. Use less heat styling. It helps to keep the hair short as it looks fuller.

Fashion, by its very nature, is a peacock of an industry – it is bright, extrovert and likes to show off. There is, however, always a minority that take a different approach to dressing – one that avoids the print-clashing, kerazy shades and artful poses of street-style photographer bait. They go for something that is – well, there’s no other way to put this – boring.
New York magazine ran an article this weekend defining the look as Normcore – clothes that are so anonymous that, as the article says, from the back their wearer could just as easily be “art kids or middle-aged, middle-American tourists.” Think unbranded jeans, plain sportswear, chunky white socks. With the increasing fame levels of fashion’s exponents of eccentricity – the likes of Anna Della Russo or blogger Bryanboy, both of whom wear full runway looks – this is the ultimate about-turn. Fashion insiders are rejecting the razzmatazz that has become a fashion norm and, instead, they’re blending into the crowd.
Clothes that were once dismissed as everyday or unremarkable have been touched by fashion’s stardust. The humble pool slide – the flip-flop cousin typically seen dangling off a bored lifeguard’s foot – is set to be the shoe of the summer. London designer Ashley Williams – part of a crowd that numbers Pixie Geldof and Harry Styles – is rarely out of them, and put them on her catwalk. New Balance trainers – a bit of a dad favourite – are enjoying a moment. Cult front-row style icon Veronika Heilbrunner, a buyer at mytheresa , regularly wears running tops, perhaps the ultimate in norm clothes, and Nike socks as part of her low-key look. This is an attribute of fashion that those working in it – who have spent the past 10 years at the bleeding edge of “fashion as art” – sometimes forget about. The flipside – function over art – feels new and a bit subversive.

Costume designers honor ’12 Years a Slave,’ ‘Behind the Candelabra’

The Costume Designers Guild members honored their own at a gala dinner and awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom on Saturday night, handing out awards for outstanding costume design in seven categories as well as a handful of honorary recognitions.
Among the high-profile attendees (many of them tapped to awards) included Mindy Kaling, Tony Hale, Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, Debra Winger, Kerry Washington, the evening’s host Joshua Malina (“The West Wing,” “Scandal”) and a va-va-voom Raquel Welch, who recognized the importance of costume design by quipping: “Face it, if [costume designer] Sir Carl Toms hadn’t put me in that fur bikini in ‘One Million Years B.C.,’ I wouldn’t be here — there wouldn’t be a Raquel Welch.”
In a possible preview of Oscar night, Patricia Norris won for excellence in period film for her efforts on “12 Years a Slave,” a category that included fellow 2014 Academy Award nominees Michael Wilkinson for “American Hustle” and Catherine Martin for “The Great Gatsby.”
Norris’ son took to the stage to accept the award on her behalf. “She said, ‘Go have a good time, I’m not going to win,’” Robert Norris said before reading a brief just-in-case list of thank-yous from his mother. “I can’t wait to give this to her. Thank you.”

April Ferry, whose costume design credits include “The Big Chill” and this year’s “RoboCop” remake, was the recipient of a career achievement award, Sharon Day received the distinguished service award and Judd Apatow was honored with the guild’s distinguished collaborator award.
After a montage of film stills and behind-the-scenes photos from his various movies and TV shows (“The Ben Stiller Show,” “Bridesmaids,” “Superbad” and “Girls” among them), Apatow noted that he had been wearing a Lacoste shirt “in every single shot.” “If that doesn’t get me a free box of [expletive] I don’t know what does,” he joked.
Amy Adams was the final honoree, receiving a crystal award in the shape of a crocodile (the iconic Lacoste logo), which was presented to her by “American Hustle” costar Jeremy Renner.
“My daughter’s obsessed with alligators right now,” Adams said, “so I’m going to put this in her room while she’s asleep and she’s going to freak out.”
Adams went on to share a light-hearted laundry list of things she’d learned from costume designers over the years, from “the actual start date of a movie” to “always wear undergarments to a fitting,” ending with profuse thanks to costume designers, costume house Western Costume “and [‘American Hustle’ key costumer] Honah Lee [Milne], who helped me keep my dignity when, at the end of the day,” Adams said, “there wasn’t a shred of it left.”

You want salon-perfect nails – but should you go for gel or acrylic?
There’s something about having gorgeous nails that just makes you feel much more glamorous. Particularly if you bite your nails, giving them that extra bit of TLC could break the habit and make you feel proud of your talons again. But with so many different ways of keeping them chic, what’s the right method for you? We’ve taken a look at some of the most popular so you can see just what’s at your fingertips when it comes to nail care.
Acrylics
The good:
Let’s face it – they look awesome. Acrylic nails are sturdy, shiny and what celebrities are made of. If you want to feel like an A-lister, head down to your local salon for a full set and you’ll come out feeling you’re stepping onto the red carpet. You can also get your beautician to add any array of gemstones, studs and stickers. If you end up taking off the original colour and paint over it at home, nail varnish also stays on acrylics for much longer than natural nails.
The bad:
Simply put, they’re not great for your nails. You also need to think about the upkeep. Acrylics often need filling in every 3-6 weeks, which means a dent in your wallet. The nail bed can also get damaged and the acrylic nails can create a great breeding ground for fungus underneath (yuck). However as long as you clean them properly, you shouldn’t experience too many problems. It’s also important to get them removed professionally or you could damage your nails a lot.
Gel
The good:
The polish is applied under a UV light, which cures and hardens it and means that it lasts for around two weeks. Gel nails also look very natural and aren’t as talon-like as some acrylics, which means contact lens wearers won’t have as many near-misses when they insert their lenses.
The bad:
UV rays can be harmful for the skin, which means you should definitely apply some sunscreen to the backs of your hands before going for a gel manicure. An acetone finger bath is also needed for removal, which isn’t that kind on your nails.
Now that you have all the facts, it should hopefully be easier to pick the method right for you.

The new face for L’Oréal Professionnel is an every day kind of girl.
THEY don’t call it crowning glory for nothing. Question is, how far would you go if you were asked to go bald?
If Kirsten Dunst was uncomfortable when asked whether she would shave her head for a movie role, she hid it well.
The freshly appointed L’Oréal Professionnel (LP) product ambassador jested: “If Quentin Tarantino wants me to act in one of his movies, we’ll make some miracle wigs or a serum to make my hair grow back faster; like in one minute,” drawing laughter from everyone in the room.
In fact, all the questions from the various media groups who were in Paris last month for the unveiling of the brand’s first ever ambassador, were rewarded with quick, witty responses from the actress.

For instance, the way she dodged one cheeky query: Who do you think is the best kisser on screen?
While most of us waited with bated breath for the juicy answer, she said: “I think I’m pretty good at kissing, so they are the lucky ones,” disappointing the whole bunch of reporters!
As she sat cross-legged on a couch in the fancy five-star Le Meurice Hotel suite opposite the Tuileries Garden – garbed in a long, black Louis Vuitton dress – Dunst was a picture of regal beauty: elegant and poised. No stranger to fame, the actress practically grew up under the spotlight after being cast in Woody Allen’s Oedipus Wrecks when she was six. Dunst has been given yet another role to play: she has been appointed the first ever international spokesperson for LP.
“I’ve always liked make-up and hair products, and anything which made me feel more beautiful. I’ve always known the importance of hair. Watching my mum get her hair done at salons, I’d mix the bowl for her hairdressers and they’d put in some highlights on my hair. I used to think it was so cool,” Dunst, 32, shared.
“The company (LP) has been around for so long and has such a long history. I can’t believe they’ve never had an international spokesperson. To me, it is special and I feel honoured. I don’t feel pressured because I think they chose me for who I am, so I don’t have to be anything I’m not,” she added.
Best known as Mary Jane Watson, the love interest of Peter Parker in the Spiderman trilogy, Dunst is said to be prepared to radically transform her mane from reddish tones to being a bright blonde for her movie roles.
“Definitely, in my work as an actress, I have to change looks and hairstyles all the time. Some of us aren’t lucky to stay as blonde as when we were teenagers, so we have to get our hair highlighted. I’ve also changed my hair colour a bit, because everyone approaches blondes differently,” she quipped.
“It can take a little wear and tear in your hair, so it’s important to have the right products to nourish and keep it healthy.
So, what was her favourite product from the brand?
“I think the Beach Waves is what I relate to the most,” Dunst said, naming one of LP’s latest products , said to leave users with a sexy tousled, after-beach look.
“It really makes the prettiest waves and lasts a long time. Also, (I like) Mythic Oil.”
Latest movie
Dunst’s latest project, The Two Faces Of January, a thriller – which is in its post-production and due to be released this year – is based on a 1964 novel by Patricia Highsmith.
It is a directorial debut for screenwriter Hossein Amini, an adaptation-expert whose recent works include Snow White And The Huntsman and 47 Ronin.
When asked what moves her to accept certain roles, Dunst elaborated: “Sometimes, for me, it is the script. The Two Faces Of January had such brilliant script, even though it was director Hossein Amini’s directorial debut. But, he is a well-known writer.
“I love Hos’ aesthetics and taste, and what he has envisioned for the film. But then, it’s hard too, as not many directors write leads for women. My role isn’t the lead, even though I’m the only woman (in the movie).
“I’m attracted to the material, but mostly it’s the director, I must say,” Dunst said.
So, what type of directors makes her tick?
“I’m all over the place. As long as it’s something interesting to play, and I believe the filmmaker will possibly make something great. I want to be part of great films. I mean, who doesn’t?” she laughed.
“You never know what it’s going to be. You can only hope that the chemistry between the people can make something wonderful.”
Creative new campaign
Dunst’s hot, funky campaign ad has proven to be spot-on for LP’s new outlook this year.
The cool, grungy image was the brainchild of Anthony Turner, the brand’s new Hairstyling Ambassador.
The British hairstylist, who bears a dashing resemblance to Adam Levine, gave some insights on how he achieved the look for Dunst.
“Scruff Me and damp hair,” he stated matter-of-factly. (Scruff Me is among the new Wild Stylers by Techni.Art range products that profers the down town, rock ‘n’ roll look.)
“I’ve always liked the day-before-night hair. There’ something cool about it, you know, when you don’t wash your hair for a few days … that doesn’t sound correct,” laughed Turner, who is compelled by the manner in which sub-cultures use hairstyles to convey idealistic non-conformist notions.
“I didn’t overwork it but just used it on Kirsten’s damp hair, and let it dry naturally on its own. Then, I sent her off to get her make-up done. Then, I used the Next Day Hair which is like a mattifier. It’s like using dry shampoo without the powdery result,” Turner said. “These products are designed to help you achieve that kind of (dishevelled) look without actually having dirty hair, if that makes sense.”
The hairstylist bonded easily with Dunst during photo shoots.
“Even though she’s a celebrity and a wonderful actress (she’s one of my favourites), I still think she’s the type of person who seems very relatable. She doesn’t feel untouchable and so far out of reach from the every day kind of girl.
“She’s very humble, cool and kind of real (almost), and for me that’s very important. We all know she’s Kirsten Dunst, but at the same time, you must feel like you can relate to her,” he continued, letting on how he introduced Candy Crush to Dunst, turning her into an addict.
Turner also loves Dunst’s tresses.
“I think she’s got great colour. I like the fact that it has a few different shades of blonde, which to me is cooler, a bit more rock ‘n’ roll. She has great hair to work with and suits the styles that I did for her,” he concluded.

The most important awards in the UK film industry gathered together some of the biggest names in British cinema, along with plenty of Hollywood royalty, all dressed up to the nines.
The British Academy of Film and Arts gave away their top honors during the ceremony held at the Royal Opera House in London, on February 16, 2014.

Angelina Jolie
Attending the BAFTAs along with partner Brad Pitt (“12 Years A Slave”), Angelina Jolie made a splash on the red carpet with her Saint Laurent suit.

The Australian actress opted for a glamorous updo with a bun to complete her red carpet look.
Dame Helen Mirren
Honored with the BAFTA Fellowship Award at the ceremony, Dame Helen Mirren took the stage to claim her prize from Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, after a long tribute to her best acting moments. She also impressed on the red carpet, in a sparkling Jacques Azagury gown with embellished sheer sleeves and wore Asprey earrings along with her simple, but sleek hairstyle.
Uma Thurman
Proving that you can still make the best dressed at the BAFTA Awards 2014 list even without a stunning gown, Uma Thurman opted for simpler, but very elegant, Atelier Versace spring 2014 creation. The sleeveless and fitted black dress was perfectly flattering to her statuesque figure. Her gorgeous presence on the red carpet also included Chopard jewels and a sophisticated updo.
Amy Adams
Nominated for “American Hustle”, Amy Adams lost one of the top honors to Cate Blanchett but she was a definite winner on the red carpet. The American actress applied the “When in Rome…” principle and wore a custom Victoria Beckham gown in all black with a masculine collar. Amy Adams chose a sleek look for her hair, pinning it to the side in a bun for a truly elegant look.
Oprah Winfrey
Nominated as a Supporting Actress for her performance in “The Butler”, Oprah Winfrey managed to make the best dressed list at the BAFTA Awards 2014 in a gorgeous Stella McCartney creation. While the superb lace bodice was very flattering, it was the satin bow sash that really brought the outfit together and helped Oprah make a big impact at the ceremony.
Olga Kurylenko
French actress Olga Kurylenko rocked the red carpet in Burberry. Combining a black V-neck bodice over a bandeau top with a coppery and shiny red skirt, the former Bong girl managed to draw a lot of attention from the paparazzi. The figure-hugging dress was accessorized only with a simple bracelet, and the actress’ hair was styled with sexy waves, perfectly suited to the gown.
Gillian Anderson
Unlike most of her peers who chose to wear designs from new collections or custom made gowns, Gillian Anderson showed up on the red carpet in vintage 1949 Balmain. The color-blocked haute couture gown was accessorized with a diamond and blue gemstone necklace, while Anderson kept her hair and makeup simple.
Lily Allen
The most controversial pick for the best dressed at the BAFTA Awards 2014 list, Lily Allen opted for an orange, coral and fuchsia Vivienne Westwood gown. The ceremony held at the Royal Opera House is always welcoming of more risqué looks, but the British singer held it together by adding yet another strong color in her hair, a pink fringe accessory for an even more dramatic look. The Detox Diet Fad :: Is it for you?

The detox diet is all the rage right now. Detoxing, or cleansing, is supposed to rid the body of toxins, clear out the digestive tract, and sort of reset the system. Thought to be good for the skin, the colon, the blood, and, of course, as a means of weight loss.
Here’s the real deal on detox, though. The thing you don’t often hear. You have to choose the right detox diet for YOU. Yep, as with so many other things in life, this is not one size fits all.
How do I know? I took on a detox this week. I’ve been working out like crazy, really watching what I eat since the first of the year, and just haven’t seen as much of a difference in how I look as I’d like. I was so focused on my stomach not being perfectly flat and thinking about how I looked that I forgot to think about how my body felt.
Well, the detox brought my attention to that in a great big hurry.
So I took on the 3 Day Cleanse from The Plan author Lyn-Genet Recitas. Looks simple enough, you get to eat so you won’t be starving, and c’mon, it’s 3 days! Since I am not at all a picky eater and love my veg, I thought it would be a breeze. Honestly I was more concerned with having to prepare extra food than the actual eating of it.
Until I started eating it. The first day was ok. I was definitely full, not particularly satisfied, but for sure thought I’d have no problem getting through 2 more days of it. Until right around lunch time of day 2, that is. After my second lunch in two days of husky greens with chickpeas, cucumbers and lime juice vinaigrette, I felt sick to my stomach, had a headache, and the thought of eating more ultra fibrous veg for dinner made me want to vomit. I decided I would just skip dinner and look forward to day 3, when I could have a few crackers and a little chicken.
By around 3:00 the afternoon of day 2 I’d decided I didn’t need a detox anyway, like a smoker convincing themself that a cig isn’t really that bad. Detox ditched.
Rather than feeling light and free and happy, I spent the next two days getting my digestion back on track, battling a raging sweet tooth that hadn’t made an appearance in a while, and feeling (and looking!) downright exhausted.
Here’s my take away on detoxing. Be sure that the detox works for your body, your system, your individual makeup. You know your body. If you need warm foods, don’t do a raw food cleanse. If you are an eater, avoid juice cleansing. There are lots of different detox diets out there, choose the one that feels right. Detox can even mean eliminating refined sugar or cutting back on caffeine.
Bottom line is this; I had a good thing going with my style of healthy eating and regular exercise. Even though I was not seeing radical results, I felt great and am in reasonable shape. The whole detox thing really threw me off track. Don’t go with the fad or what works for someone else. Do what makes you and your body feel good.
NY Fashion: Walker’s fitting tribute

It is fitting that a New Zealander is behind a fashion show paying tribute to the revolutionary suffragettes, a senior fashion lecturer says of designer Karen Walker’s latest collection at New York Fashion Week.
Walker unveiled her fall 2014 collection today, which used the Suffragettes as its inspiration.
“What we really liked about the suffragettes as a starting point was that reinvention and questioning of beauty and what that is,” Walker said backstage before the show.
Auckland University of Technology senior fashion lecturer Kathryn Hardy Bernal said the loose-fitting, utilitarian, yet stylish collection was an appropriate nod to the Suffragettes.
“In the Victorian period, women were in very constrictive, even dangerous clothes that restricted their movements and caused injury. Sometimes it was even fatal. For example, the metal boning would come out of corsets and pierce women in the lungs,” she said.
“As well as fighting for the vote, the Suffragettes started wearing comfortable, more utilitarian clothing so they could actually have a life. It was about liberating women from restrictions that prevented them from enjoying life.”
New Zealand was the first country to give women the vote in 1893, some 27 years ahead of the United States and 35 years before the United Kingdom.
“I think it’s really appropriate that it’s a New Zealander doing this kind of thing,” Ms Hardy Bernal said.
“I think this Karen Walker collection does quite well; it’s an adoption of men’s design elements but it’s still clothing for women. It’s saying `I am a woman but I’m wearing something that gives me the same freedom as a man, in comfort and in style’.”
Walker’s collection uses full, feminine skirts made in a durable drill, prim Victorian elements – frill collar, buttoned up shirts – sitting with a largely utilitarian, work-wear inspired blue palette.
She uses prints made up of spanners, bolts and broken hearts and continues the Suffragettes’ tradition of using slogans:”Faster Better Stronger”, “Young Willing and Eager”, “Liberal Miserable and Cynical”.
Walker said she did considered herself a feminist. “Isn’t everyone?” she asked.
“We’re all lucky that living in 2014 we’re not the ones being called upon to fight those fights – so much has been done for us. But there are a lot of places around the world where they still haven’t got that and the same rights – in Africa, a lot of these women aren’t even considered citizens.
“If I was in 1895, I’d be holding up those placards; I’m just lucky that I don’t have to. Today I get to tell my story and make my point of view in different ways.”
