With the holiday season already upon us, most of us are planning to go for vacations to either cold hill stations or the cool sunny beaches. But both these destinations, offering completely different climates will demand skin care regimes that are typical to the weather there.

Dr Apratim Goel, dermatologist, says, “The travelling, whether by road or by air, can put a lot of stress on the skin. It is hard to imagine anything worse than having your holiday or journey ruined by developing a skin problem.”

Preventing skin problems during travel is relatively easy, as long as you follow a few basic sensible rules.

Cosmetologist Dr Jamuna Pai says, “You should remember to take care of not just your face but your hands and feet too while you are out travelling. And most importantly whether you are going to a beach destination or a hill station you must not ignore sun protection.” Experts say that there are cases when the sun rays reflecting off the snow and ice can also damage your skin.

The key to a successful trip lies in preparation and planning. “If you are unsure about how you will manage aspects of your journey, then you need to seek advice from an experienced traveller and also from your skin specialist prior to the journey,” says Dr Goel.

Here are some tips (see boxes) you need to keep in mind for both hot and cold holiday destinations. The ultra-dry air on airplanes and the colder, drier climate of the place where you travel to makes it essential to keep up your skin care routine. It is a great idea to buy travel-size versions of your skin, cleanser, moisturiser, lotion and exfoliant and pack them in your hand carry bag. Re-applying while on the plane (most flights it is available in the kit provided to you) will allow your skin to stay hydrated.

Tips for beach destinations

Exfoliate and moisturise your feet every night while on vacation. Sightseeing and walking barefoot on the beach will wreak havoc on your pedicure — not to mention your feet will be tired. Bring a foot file and use it on soles and heels while showering. Follow that with a moisturising massage cream.

Keep a medical emergency kit with you where you have apart from other first aid stuff, an antiallergic tablet, a smoothening calamine and aloe vera lotion, a topical steroid cream like mometasone or clobetasone, which can be used in case of any rash or skin allergy. You could ask your dermatologist to guide you assemble one and also guide you to use it. In case you get a jellyfish sting on the beach, you are not likely to get a doctor nearby. Hence a medical kit for first aid comes handy.

You should always wear shoes and socks when you travel in a car. In some cars, the floor may heat up, causing burns to the feet.

Be wary of your vehicles that have been sitting in the sun. Seats, belt buckles and other surfaces can hold a considerable amount of heat. If these surfaces come into contact with your skin, burns can occur.

If travelling long distances in the heat, make sure that you drink plenty of fluids. Application of various products only on the outer surface does not lead to an ultimate healthy skin. What one needs is a healthy diet and a peaceful mind. The meals should have ample amount of juicy fruits and vegetables along with at least 12-14 glasses of water a day. Intake of liquids help your skin to retain the essential oils automatically and acts as a natural protection against dryness.

You can also start taking oral supplements containing vitamin C, beta carotene, glutathione and other antioxidants one week prior to your travel to a dry place.

Tips for hill stations

If you have been exposed to extreme cold or snow, take care not to have your feet directly under heater vents — hot air can also cause skin burns.

Again, there are certain parts of the body that require special care when you are travelling to hill stations, like feet and hands. Specially the feet tend to crack and they are the most neglected areas, constantly exposed to dirt and dryness on holidays. Apply thick petroleum based cream and wear soft cotton socks.

Whether the travel is to a warm place or cold, please don’t miss on your sun protection. Apart from wearing hats, umbrella etc, remember to use a high SPF subscreen (at least 35) and keep reapplying every 2-4 hrs. Sun damage can cause pigmentation and also cause premature wrinkles.

Your scalp too needs special mention as many of us suffer from the dandruff that can have long term effect on the like hair fall. Use ketoconazole containing shampoo once a week.

Cleanse your way to clearer skin with products suited to you

2014 April 10. | Szerző:

If I had my way they would be banned from every bathroom.

Wipes may have revolutionised the beauty industry (sales have trebled over the last few years and, yes, they come in handy when you’re on the go or after a very late night) but they cannot and should not replace a proper cleansing routine.

For starters many wipes contain potent ingredients such as high levels of alcohol, which can strip the complexion of its natural oils and cause excessive dryness. Others may contain MI (methylisothiazolinone), a preservative, which has been proven to cause rashes and allergies.

short prom dresses

Moist cloths packed on top of each other can be a breeding ground for bacteria so for this reason many contain high levels of preservatives. Finally, when using them, the majority of women are far too heavy handed, rubbing them vigorously all over the face and tugging at the delicate skin around the eyes which can accelerate the ageing process and even cause more wrinkles and bags. So what should you use instead?

Invest in a good cleanser

Why splash out on expensive moisturisers and masks but then skimp on the most important part of any skin-transforming routine – a cleanser?

A high-performance cleanser will penetrate deeply and will often moisturise and tone the skin too. Cleansing with the right products will make a real difference to the quality and health of your skin. It will revive your complexion at the beginning as well as at the end of a long day, ridding it of all make-up, pollutants and impurities and ultimately allowing it to breathe.

It will also hydrate, soothe and invigorate skin cells.

More importantly it will prepare the skin to absorb a moisturiser or serum much more effectively.

KissyDress

If you are still wedded to your wipes then at least read the ingredients’ list and opt for a paraben-free option. Look for packs that are labelled with words such as “gentle”, “safe”, “hypoallergenic”, “dermatologist tested” and “fragrance-free”.

Then double cleanse by using a cleanser.

MY TOP CLEANSING TIPS

If you’re using a cream or balm use your fingertips and cleanse using circular movements for at least 30 seconds then let the cleanser sit for at least one or two minutes.

Do not be too harsh with your skin, even if it’s oily. Always wash cleanser off with tepid water and a flannel or sponge. This way you get rid of surface dead skin cells as it’s like a mild exfoliation.

Gentle steams once a week can really help to deep clean but don’t do this if you have broken capillaries or sensitive skin.

It is especially important to cleanse at night. Morning washing will wake you up but if you don’t clean your skin well at night, the time when your body is making repairs, it will not be able to detoxify.

The Health And Safety Lowdown On 4 Common Hair Products

2014 April 8. | Szerző:

With all the hair care products available, consumers can easily become entangled in their choices. Some products promise to be gentler on hair, while others offer thickening or smoothing solutions, but not all of these claims are scientifically based.

Despite their uplifting promises, some products can be just a waste of money, and some can actually damage the hair, said Dr. Nicole Rogers, an assistant professor of dermatology at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Here are some tips to help you decide which hair care products to buy, as well as the lowdown on the science of some commonly touted ingredients.

Are sulfate-free shampoos really better?

Sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate are two of the most common shampoo ingredients. These chemicals are what make shampoos turn into a thick lather in the shower, which removes dirt and debris from hair.

Recently, sulfates have come under attack for being harsh on the hair by removing natural oils, causing frizziness and damage to dyed hair. Now, many products bear a “sulfate-free” label, and these are often more expensive than their counterparts.

However, Rogers said there is no scientific evidence that sulfate-free shampoos are gentler on the hair than shampoos that contain sulfate.

Similarly, no scientific data supports marketing claims that some sulfate-free shampoos extend the life of hair color or keratin treatments, Rogers said.

It is possible that some people, particularly those with the skin condition eczema, are sensitive to sulfates. There have been a few reports linking sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate to contact dermatitis in some people. For these people, sulfate-free shampoos can be beneficial, Rogers said.

Are keratin treatments safe?

Keratin treatments are touted for their ability to smooth and straighten hair, turning the tightest curls into silky threads, with an effect lasting up to five months.

However, in addition to keratin, these products contain the dangerous chemical formaldehyde, often exceeding the concentrations permitted in Canada and European countries. Keratin treatment products have also been cited numerous times by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for using higher levels of formaldehyde than are allowed in the United States.

Formaldehyde can harm the eyes, lungs and nasal passages, Rogers said. The chemical is also thought to be a carcinogen.

Moreover, there is no data showing that keratin treatments can strengthen the hair. Rather, the high-heat flat irons needed to seal the formaldehyde into the hair shaft can cause long-term damage to the hair, Rogers said.

Are hair-thickening products safe?

Products marketed as hair thickeners temporarily coat the hair shaft to make hair look thicker, but they cannot change the natural density of hair. The thickening effect will only last until the hair is washed.

Rogers said that these products are very safe, and advised consumers to look for hair-thickening products that contain hydrolyzed keratin or dimethicone, which coat the hair shaft to make hair appear thicker.

Some hair-thickening products now being marketed also contain the drug minoxidil, which can boost the density of thinning hair and create noticeably thicker hair. Minoxidil is the only topical medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration to regrow hair and slow future hair loss, Rogers said.

Should heat protectants be used when blow drying?

Heat from hair dryers, flat irons or curling irons can be very damaging to hair, and cause a condition that dermatologists call bubble hair: When the water in the hair is heated and turns to steam, it causes bubbles to form within the hair shaft. The result is brittle hair, with frizzy ends.

To counteract the effects of heat, Rogers recommended using a heat protectant before applying any heat to the hair. These products are sprayed or applied onto the hair, and contain protective polymers and silicones that insulate hair from heat.

Also, it is better to use the lowest temperature settings on hair dryers, and use heat as little as necessary and for the shortest time possible, Rogers said.

For hair already damaged by heat, moisturizing the hair regularly can help reduce the appearance of heat damage, but it cannot repair the hair, Rogers said. Cutting damaged hair, and allowing healthy hair to regrow, can also improve your locks’ appearance.

Organic beauty, spa products are a rage

2014 March 28. | Szerző:

Where in today’s world, people prefer to have an organic lifestyle, it is finding an entry in cosmetics’ as well

The term ‘organic’ can mean so many different things, from carbon compounds to fundamental laws. Now- with the times where people are getting more and more conscious about their health and lifestyles, they are preferring to move towards ‘organic living’- which includes- consumption of products which are safer for all living things, pro-environment and healthier and maintain ecological balance too. It refers to using the products made out of totally made sans the use of chemicals. Be it food, fabrics or cosmetics- organic products are catching up popularity.

There is one more aspect to going organic — usage of organic cosmetics, beauty and spa treatments. Interestingly, this is a sector wherein the preference for usage of natural products was always high in demand. It is just in the case where people need a quick treatment, they prefer chemical based treatments. Otherwise, higher emphasis of all the beauty treatments as well as hair treatments is towards usage of herbal and natural ingredients in the beauty products. Like for facials, home-care products, spa and salon regulars always prefer herbal products. Similar is for spa treatments where we have sea-based minerals, sea weed, algae products- these are all 100% natural. It is undoubtedly preferred as they are eco-friendly and show good results on long term-basis on your skin and hair. It seems like surely the chemical-free products are finding more and more takers day by day. And why not?

When the side effects are almost zilch, beauty is going ‘organic way’!

5 methods to combat hair loss after chemotherapy

2014 March 4. | Szerző:

When a person undergoes cancer treatment, they not only endure a lot physically, but also on a mental and psychological level. Not to mention, the physical changes that it brings along. Several of the chemotherapy drugs used during the treatment of cancer cause hair fall. This is because chemotherapy drugs work by attacking the actively dividing cancer cells. But they also attack other actively growing cells in your body like that in the hair follicle. These drugs cause hair thinning, hair fall or complete baldness depending on the type of the drug, the dosage, duration etc. However, once the chemotherapy sessions are over, hair starts to grow back in a few months. But with radiotherapy, chances are that the hair loss may be permanent or patchy.

It is a very distressing phase when one is battling with cancer and also lose their hair which is strongly associated with one’s self-image and beauty. Though strong support from family and friends, and counselling can help ease this phase, there are also certain options available for such survivors.

Some people opt for wigs during the course of the treatment. Some shave their head or go bald as a symbol of their fight against cancer. Here are a few more possibilities:

Scalp ice caps: These are caps that are lined with a gel that is usually refrigerated and chilled. This is applied to the scalp during chemotherapy so that blood flow to the scalp is sluggish and chemotherapy drugs do not actively flow there. This in turn prevents hair fall. But it may not be available in all hospitals so remember to check with your doctor. The cap is put on the scalp 40-50 minutes before the chemotherapy is given.

Hair loss, cancer

Hair replacement: It is a type of a high-end hair toupee. A mesh base is first designed after taking the dimensions of the head and it is colour coordinated to the skin tone. Human hair is then tied to this mesh with some special knots in a way that it appears like hair is growing out of the mesh base. This base is then fitted to the head.

Hair transplantation: If the hair thinning seems permanent or if there are patchy areas of hair loss after finishing the treatment, hair transplant may also be a solution. There are 2 types — FUT where a strip of scalp is removed from the back of the head and the hair grafts are dissected out and implanted or there is the FUE method where individual grafts are removed with the help of an FUE motor and implanted.

Minoxidil: It may not help during the process of chemotherapy but it helps to grow hair back quicker after finishing chemotherapy. Used for both men and women, it is a solution that is applied directly to the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles. It works best on the crown area compared to the frontal region. However, one needs to be very careful while applying it since application to the face or neck skin can cause unwanted hair growth in those areas! And you may have to continue using it for a really long time since stopping the usage has often been linked to increased hair loss.

Finasteride: Finasteride also helps by promoting hair growth after chemotherapy. It is a pill that blocks the action of natural hormones in scalp hair and reduces hair loss. Approved for use in only men with androgenic hair loss, this drug is found to be safe in post menopausal women.

Haircare: Though these methods will help, one also needs to take care of their hair to ensure better growth. Therefore, gentle treatment of the hair must commence immediately. Use mild shampoo, brush less vigorously, avoid chemical treatments like perming, straightening, colouring. Use less heat styling. It helps to keep the hair short as it looks fuller.

The Detox Diet Fad :: Is it for you?

2014 February 14. | Szerző:

The detox diet is all the rage right now. Detoxing, or cleansing, is supposed to rid the body of toxins, clear out the digestive tract, and sort of reset the system. Thought to be good for the skin, the colon, the blood, and, of course, as a means of weight loss.

Here’s the real deal on detox, though. The thing you don’t often hear. You have to choose the right detox diet for YOU. Yep, as with so many other things in life, this is not one size fits all.

How do I know? I took on a detox this week. I’ve been working out like crazy, really watching what I eat since the first of the year, and just haven’t seen as much of a difference in how I look as I’d like. I was so focused on my stomach not being perfectly flat and thinking about how I looked that I forgot to think about how my body felt.

Well, the detox brought my attention to that in a great big hurry.

So I took on the 3 Day Cleanse from The Plan author Lyn-Genet Recitas. Looks simple enough, you get to eat so you won’t be starving, and c’mon, it’s 3 days! Since I am not at all a picky eater and love my veg, I thought it would be a breeze. Honestly I was more concerned with having to prepare extra food than the actual eating of it.

Until I started eating it. The first day was ok. I was definitely full, not particularly satisfied, but for sure thought I’d have no problem getting through 2 more days of it. Until right around lunch time of day 2, that is. After my second lunch in two days of husky greens with chickpeas, cucumbers and lime juice vinaigrette, I felt sick to my stomach, had a headache, and the thought of eating more ultra fibrous veg for dinner made me want to vomit. I decided I would just skip dinner and look forward to day 3, when I could have a few crackers and a little chicken.

By around 3:00 the afternoon of day 2 I’d decided I didn’t need a detox anyway, like a smoker convincing themself that a cig isn’t really that bad. Detox ditched.

Rather than feeling light and free and happy, I spent the next two days getting my digestion back on track, battling a raging sweet tooth that hadn’t made an appearance in a while, and feeling (and looking!) downright exhausted.

Here’s my take away on detoxing. Be sure that the detox works for your body, your system, your individual makeup. You know your body. If you need warm foods, don’t do a raw food cleanse. If you are an eater, avoid juice cleansing. There are lots of different detox diets out there, choose the one that feels right. Detox can even mean eliminating refined sugar or cutting back on caffeine.

Bottom line is this; I had a good thing going with my style of healthy eating and regular exercise. Even though I was not seeing radical results, I felt great and am in reasonable shape. The whole detox thing really threw me off track. Don’t go with the fad or what works for someone else. Do what makes you and your body feel good.

Lauren Laverne on style: dressing like your hero

2014 February 4. | Szerző:

Funny (not) old age, 30. In the run-up to it, I was assured by everyone that a time of personal crisis loomed. I would mourn my evaporating youth. Question who I was. Hurl baleful cries heavenward about the meaning of it all, my metabolism. “Saturn returns!” people would say ominously before going off to a party to do Miaow Miaow and listen to Kasabian (yes, reader, this was some half-decade ago).

In the event, I entered my 30s without noticing, probably because I had a very small baby and four jobs. I vaguely remember the unfamiliar sensation of looking at myself in a mirror on the day itself, before sneaking out for 1.5 hours for a celebratory lunch. This feels like it happened six months rather than five years ago. Everyone knows time speeds up in your 30s. The decade – adulthood itself – snuck up on me while I was distracted. I paddled frantically past the midpoint between birth and my bus pass too busy keeping my head above water to take in the view. Until now. Suddenly, somehow, my youngest child is three. I check the mirror again. I’m still in it, but different. I stare hard at my reflection. What on earth is that woman going to wear?

Dress like your hero

My best friend (six years older, immaculately dressed) came out the other end of this 30something seachange a while ago. I seek his advice, hoping it and my fashion smarts will get me through. “The first thing,” he says, “is to forget about fashion.” Oh. “I decided to start asking myself: ‘Would Steve McQueen wear this?’ If the answer’s no, I don’t buy it.” Perhaps a similar aesthetic touchstone could help buoy me up in the deep-end of grown-up dressing. I spend weeks mulling over Steve McQueen’s female equivalent (Jane Birkin? Kate Moss? Audrey Hepburn? Alexa Chung?)… I appraise the wardrobe of his leading ladies.Faye Dunaway never looked hotter than in The Thomas Crown Affair, but an all-white wardrobe accessorised with giant hats and beige nails? Hmm.

It turns out that the female equivalent of Steve McQueen is an imaginary Lady Steve McQueen. Lady Steve is more of a spirit guide than a literal template (for example she does dresses, but nothing too girly; prints, but only with purpose).

I remove the contents of my wardrobe and put back only what Lady Steve would wear. A harrowing 70% of it fails to pass muster (my pain is Oxfam’s gain). Quentin Crisp said: “Fashion is what you adopt when you don’t know who you are.” Shopping as Lady Steve saves time and money. I’m more selective, less emotional. I may really want those floral Jacquard shorts, but Lady Steve is of the same mind as Mr Crisp when it comes to high-fashion items. Her wish list is above. Perhaps a wardrobe hero could help you through a time of transition. I’d love to know if they have.

Keratin treatment for reducing frizz in your hair – does it work?

2014 January 21. | Szerző:

Keratin hair treatment is commonplace these days in almost all salons – big or small. It not only promises to make your hair smooth, shiny and frizz-free, it also makes it straight but not in an unnatural-looking, poker-straight strands. It softens your curls and with the help of other chemicals, helps retain the look for a good few months. Here’s what happens in a keratin treatment.

What happens in a keratin treatment?

During the treatment, hair is shampooed and blow-dried, after which the solution is applied with a brush and combed through the hair, and allowed to absorb for about 20 minutes. Hair is then blow-dried once more and flat ironed and the oils of the treatment will set into the hair within a few hours – so static strands are normal at this time. Rod Anker, Creative Director of Monsoon Salon and Spa also advises that the hair must be kept straight for 72 hours, without using any accessories, as it may disturb the process.

Other benefits

Human hair is said to be as strong as the horn of a rhino, as both are made of the same protein, keratin. Keratin is now being used not just to straighten the hair, but also fortify them. Rod said that keratin does not make the hair straight, even though it may appear straight for some time but the objective of the treatment is to reduce frizz, curl and help the hair become more manageable. He added that it washes out after sometime, therefore 3-5 months is typically the length of the time that it lasts.

Who should opt for this treatment?

Keratin hair treatment

2013 mermaid prom dresses | kissydress purple prom dresses

People who blow-dry their hair too much or have curls they find unmanageable can opt for this treatment. Keratin will help keep the frizz away and reduce your usage of strengtheners.

But stay away during pregnancy or if your hair is too damaged and weak from excessive colouring.

Is it safe?

There has been a debate about the use of formaldehyde or formalin in this treatment which bonds with the hair strands and retains keratin’s effect on the hair. It can have adverse reactions and also might be carcinogenic.

According to FDA and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), these products are safe to use unless the levels don’t exceed the set limits and they normally don’t.

You need to be aware that products used in keratin-based hair-straightening that may contain high levels of formaldehyde. It is of some concern because formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. It can also cause general sickness, runny nose, eye irritation, itching and headache. Go to a reputed salon and choose good brands. Make sure the salon stylists aren’t adding extra formaldehyde or formalin. There are formaldehyde-free products as well but it will contain a different chemical giving the same effect. If you have an allergic reaction after the procedure then do inform the salon about it and visit your doctor at the earliest.
