Kylie Jenner’s MMVA Style Ruled Too

2014 June 17. | Szerző:

Poor Kylie Jenner. With sisters like tabloid queen Kim Kardashian and actual, legit, up-and-coming model Kendall Jenner, the 16-year-old is constantly getting upstaged by practically everyone in the Kardashian family (even Rob, amidst his much-publicized weight issues and the family’s rumored ire over him skipping the Kimye wedding) and missing out on all the attention typically reserved for the baby in the family.

I mean, sure, she dates the ridiculously cute and equally famous Jaden Smith; has nearly 10 million Instagram followers; and recently “wrote” a young adult novel, so yes, she gets her fair share of time in the spotlight. But when it comes to fashion, at least, it’s rare that the youngest Kardashian klan member is the topic of conversation.

Take Sunday’s 2014 MuchMusic Video Awards, for example. Hosted by both Kendall and Kylie, I would wager that at least three-quarters of the buzz surrounding the annual event and its fierce fashion has to do with Kendall’s insanely sexy, double-slit, super-leg-baring gown, or even the cutout-back, python-print dress she slipped into during the awards show. And as much as these sultry looks earned the limelight they received, it must be said: Kylie’s ensembles deserved their fair share of praise and attention, too.

prom dresses 2014

Let’s just start with her red carpet look. Yes, it was short. Yes, it was tight. And yes, it showed a fair amount of skin (or, at least, the illusion of skin). But that rich orange hue looks absolutely divine against her olive skin and dark locks (hey, where’s the blue?!), and the all-over beading really is a work of art (though the shoes are a total snooze fest).

Hitting the stage in a new ensemble, baby Jenner also looked undeniably pretty in her printed mini dress, a look she kept pared down with minimal jewelry, another nude lip, and basic strappy sandals.

Switching in the middle of the show, Jenner ditched her short hemlines in favor of a fresh, color-blocked ensemble that — while leaving room for improvement in the pants department — looked both playful and mature (and most definitely fashion-forward) all at the same time.

Let’s see a close up of that amazing top.

Just as I expected: Structured, satiny, and oh-so chic. And even though it’s showing a little more skin than I would want my 16-year-old daughter (or sister or niece) revealing, there’s no denying that it’s a fierce piece of fashion that goes beyond your typical Kardashian klothing. And that’s something to be applauded, right?

La Fressange brings Paris chic to Japanese label

2014 April 22. | Szerző:

Paris fashion has been on the back foot recently with Tom Ford championing British eccentricity in London and Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane leading a style renaissance in Los Angeles.

Cue ex-supermodel Ines de La Fressange with a collection restating the case for her own personal brand of classic Parisian chic.

The one-time muse of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld whose book on how to dress like a real Parisian was a best-seller has just completed a collaboration with Japanese fashion retailer Uniqlo that had shoppers queuing in the rain in Tokyo.

Belted shirt and wrap dresses, versatile shirts and narrow trousers accessorised with caps and spotted scarves for spring/summer 2014 were snapped up in minutes when they went on sale in the Japanese capital last month with some items already sold out online.

De La Fressange and Uniqlo creative director Naoki Takizawa said they knew each other only by reputation before they embarked on their collaboration but quickly discovered they shared very similar tastes.

Since taking the helm at Uniqlo in 2012, Takizawa, a protege and long-time collaborator of Japanese designer Issey Miyake, has overseen a transformation of the utilitarian brand with an injection of luxurious but simple fashion with mass appeal.

“It was fun because after ten minutes we were friends and wanted to work together,” said De La Fressange, 56, a firm enthusiast of mixing and matching high-fashion with low-cost basics, in an interview in Paris.

“We both came from the luxury and creative world and we wanted more or less the same kind of things. I had the impression that he was showing me the fabrics and things I wanted to have before I even said it,” she said.

They shared an admiration not just for Miyake but also other Japanese designers such Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo, which made working together “very easy”, she said.

De La Fressange famously set out her personal style philosophy in her 2010 book La Parisienne.

‘Everything is possible’

The daughter of a French aristocrat and Argentinian model, the 1980s Chanel couture model advised readers to mix styles, experiment with new labels and men’s clothing and invest in a good trenchcoat, blazer and little black dress.

Her “don’ts” included steering clear of bling, coordinating shoes and bags, and fur for anyone over 50 wanting to avoid the “wrinkled trophy wife” look.

Translated into at least 17 languages and with the English title Parisian Chic, the book has sold over a million copies worldwide.

Uniqlo global marketing chief Jorgen Andersson said De La Fressange, who is a brand ambassador for L’Oreal and recently returned to her eponymous label, was an inspiration for his brand’s customers.

“She has a great sense of taste. She has that magic that every woman wants,” he said.

“How do you put pieces together? Because that’s really what fashion is all about, not buying everything from one brand but picking up things and mixing it with what you already have in your wardrobe to create an appealing look.”

Little known outside Japan only a decade ago, the Uniqlo brand created by Tadashi Yanai, one of Japan’s richest men, has in recent years pursued an aggressive international expansion strategy.

As well as stores all over Asia, it now has outlets worldwide in cities such as New York, Paris, London and Moscow.

In another highly publicity-conscious collaboration this year, it has teamed up with US musician Pharrell Williams to produce a range of T-shirts and caps due to go on sale from mid-April.

De La Fressange and Takizawa, meanwhile, have also completed a second collection for autumn/winter 2014/15 and no one is ruling out a third.

“Everything is possible,” she said.

7 Style Lessons to Learn from Doris Day

2014 April 4. | Szerző:

Happy Birthday, Doris Day! The timeless Hollywood icon turns 90 today — and according to People, she’s still going strong. Perhaps its her chipper outlook on life or her supreme love of animals that has kept her young at heart. When asked what she’s learned over the years, Day answered: “Live life to the fullest … It’s not coming back again.” Whatever her secret may be, one thing’s for sure: we’ve got a lot to learn from the celebrated superstar. Here are 7 lessons to learn from Ms. Day herself.

Go Bright and Bold

No matter the era, Day was never afraid to wear something bright and bold, like this super mod polka dot dress and matching head scarf. The next time you reach for your all black ensemble, consider adding a pop of color to brighten your (Doris) day.

Channel Your Inner Parisian Girl

If ever in a style conundrum, it’s always a good idea to ask yourself: what would a French girl do? Even Doris Day knows the importance of capturing that enviable je ne sais quoi those French girls just ooze from their Riviera-sun-soaked bodies.

Wrap Dresses Never Go Out of Style

Especially in sweater dress form. With a killer cowlneck.

Accentuate Your Eyes with a Matching Ensemble

Even if your eyes aren’t brilliantly blue, learn how to dress to highlight your pretty peepers. Blue, green and hazel-eyed-gals, consider wearing green, blue and teal tones. Brown-eyed-girls — you don’t have to stick to brown sweaters and shirts. Opt for gold tones or accessories to help accentuate your eyes.

Menswear is Always a Good Idea

Borrowing from the boys will always be in fashion, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add your feminine touch to it, like this pink bow tie.

Don’t Be Afraid of Sequins and Sparkle

Sequins and sparkle embellishments aren’t just for grandmas. They’re perfectly stylish as long as you keep it tasteful.

Diamonds Will Always Be a Girl’s Best Friend

No matter what they say about diamonds, do not be ashamed to admit that they’re your favorite accessory of choice.

Maje captures Asia’s diversity by going to extremes

2013 December 16. | Szerző:

As the invasion of contemporary French brands continues around the world, their appeal to fashion-savvy working women is increasingly clear.

Labels such as Maje, Sandro, Claudie Pierlot, The Kooples and Zadig & Voltaire have flooded Asian markets and attracted sophisticated consumers from the middle and upper middle class.

Cool, urban and effortless, the French contemporary aesthetic is a globalised take on the classic styles Paris is known for. Its muses are more likely to be Alexa Chung and Lou Doillon, rather than delicate Audrey Hepburn-types.

Maje has enjoyed a measure of success in Hong Kong with the reopening of its IFC store earlier this month.

When I met Judith Milgrom, Maje’s glamorous founder at her Paris headquarters in October, she said the company’s focus for this year and next would be on opening more stores in the US and China.

The company’s success did not come overnight. Maje was founded 15 years ago. Back then there was no brand that offered what it did, Milgrom says. Her sister, Evelyn Chetrite, had founded competing brand Sandro with her husband just a few years earlier.

“There is always stimulating and healthy competition,” says Milgrom. “Evelyn is a very talented person … but we have our own tastes.”

Both brands, as well as Claudie Pierlot (whom both sisters design for) soon formed an interesting fashion movement. Investment from the LVMH Group luxury goods conglomerate, followed by American private equity firm KKR buying a 65 per cent stake this year, has spurred a global expansion for the brand.

“Basically, when we started we were right in the middle of the top brands and the cheaper brands that didn’t have the style to go with it.

“I created the collections to offer an alternative to working active women … as well as the younger fashionistas who could not afford those luxury brands. I wanted to give them the opportunity to wear beautiful pieces at affordable prices.”

It is a niche that has proven to be rewarding for both sisters. With the diverse lifestyles of today’s woman, Maje – a little bohemian, a little glam, but always offering plenty of chic, sharp office wear – has found a combination that really hits home.

blue prom dresses 2013

“Fashion today has to definitely adapt to this lifestyle. I like to create collections that you can wear all day at work and then you can just add one accessory or beautifully cut jacket and carry on into the evening,” says Milgrom.

The brand has been popular in Asia for some time, she says, despite only setting up stores here a few years ago.

And while Maje’s French customers may still favour a more effortless style, Milgrom says her Hong Kong clients are often more fashion conscious and particular about specific pieces. The collection for spring-summer 2014 channels a feeling of warmth that is inspired by an imagined, road trip across the US, moving through extremes between the coasts.

Feather-light, ethereal pieces are accompanied by heavy, protective jackets. “Leather fringe suede might remind people of Texas and coastal music festivals, but on the other side, there is the New York working girl with fitted, black structured pieces,” says Milgrom.

Well-edited extremes seem to be a theme at Maje. And with women’s styles diversifying fast in Asia, they appear to be hitting a rather powerful note.

Isabel Marant’s designer collection is coming to H&M

2013 November 7. | Szerző:

And in just over a week’s time it is landing on our doorstep.

The Isabel Marant for H&M collection arrives in Glasgow’s flagship Buchanan Street store next Thursday.

So expect overnight queuing as one of the catwalk’s most celebrated names takes her signature style to the wider public – and for a fraction of the price.

The collection oozes French laidback style, mixing some of the Parisian’s best-loved details, including fringing and chunky knits. Designer Isabel, who launched her fashion house nearly a decade ago, has combined wearable pieces with bohemian accessories to channel a chic but quirky vibe.

From navy peacoats to keep out the cold to silk scarves that are bound to be on a few Christmas lists, it is no wonder the designer has such a wide following.

As well as the line for women and young people, Isabel has created pieces for men for the first time.

The designer follows in the footsteps of Versace, Marni, Lanvin and Stella McCartney in collaborating with the high-street store.

She added: “I aim at creating something real, that women want to wear in their everyday lives, with a certain carelessness, which I think is very Parisian. You dress up, but do not pay too much attention and still look sexy. The collection is infused with this kind of easiness and attitude.

“Everything can be mixed following one’s own instincts: my take on fashion is all about personality.”

The line launches in H&M Buchanan Street at 9am next Thursday, November 14.

A POP-UP shop is launching in a Glasgow shopping centre.

Parma Vintage (PV) will set up in Princes Square, on the lower ground floor, on Friday, and will be in the mall until Sunday.

Set up in 2009 by Gillian McGilp and named after her favourite retro sweets, Parma Violets, Gillian created a business from the vintage finds she picked up during her time as an air hostess.

PV became a one-stop shop in Gourock, Inverclyde, for vintage, modern brands, accessories, gifts and homewares.

The store mixes vintage with new on-trend fashion, and they stock an eclectic mix of both to suit all styles.

Gillian said: “Our customers range from people who live across the street to fashion lovers on the other side of the world.

“We want to bring the fun shopping experience of PV to you – and what better place to start than the style hub of Glasgow?”

Where is the world’s true beauty?

2013 October 25. | Szerző:

I am on a hunt to find the most beautiful woman in the world. She’s lurking out there somewhere. I just know it.

My quest began when, earlier this year, People magazine declared Gwyneth Paltrow to be the most beautiful woman in the world, circa 2013. I have reservations about this choice.

Paltrow is unquestionably beautiful. But her strenuous efforts to achieve perfection – thrashing around a gym morning noon and night with celebrity fitness trainer Tracy Anderson and eating nothing but plankton and kale juice – leave us all shrieking, “What would she look like if you took away her battery of Pilates gurus and aura cleansers?”

I’d argue that in order to be crowned the most beautiful woman in the world, you should be living your life full-throttle à la Liz Taylor – more on her in a moment – rather than tormenting yourself with some deranged, ascetic self-maintenance regimen.

Copy of sa beauty gwyneth paltrow [1]

Watching the cadaverous models parade down the runways of New York’s recent Fashion Week, I found myself wondering whether one of these gals – a lissome Latvian, an elongated Estonian – might not be the most beautiful woman in the world, or MBWITW. A fashion runway seems, on the face of it, like an OK place to look.

But the most beautiful woman in the world should also have a cheeky demeanour and a decent rack. Sadly, these two attributes were in short supply.

Our cultural fixation on the identity and whereabouts of the MBWITW has been going on for a while. Helen of Troy was the first groovy chick to win the title. She was very unusual because she used her beauty to launch ships. This was a first, and a last. None of Helen’s successors showed any maritime aspirations. Instead they cashed in their God-given attributes to acquire shoes and jewellery.

After Helen, there was a bit of a lull. In the Middle Ages people were too busy trying not get burnt at the stake or eaten by wolves to spend much time worrying about beauty. Things perked up in the late 18th century.

Enter Pauline Bonaparte. There is no celeb today who is as horny, outrageous, or spendaholic as Napoleon Bonaparte’s gorgeous sister. Pauline was a walking, talking, shagging, shopping, drop-dead gorgeous tour-de-force. She makes Kim Kardashian look like Anne of Green Gables.

In August 1803 she hit the mother lode and married Prince Camillo Borghese. She moved into the Borghese Palace in Rome and swanned about in transparent frocks striking Grecian attitudes. A marble replica of Pauline adorns the Villa Borghese, giving woodies to visiting males to this very day.

Copy of sa beauty naomi campbell [1]

After Pauline kicked the bucket there were a bunch of wars which caused another lull. This one lasted until lasted until the 1950s. Enter Elizabeth Taylor. Everyone was in the thrall of that violet-eyed, bejewelled, hooch-guzzlin’ brunette. (Everyone except Debbie Reynolds, whose husband, Eddie Fisher, ditched her for the MBWITW.)

After Liz, things sped up radically and the MBWITW came thick and fast. Enter the C-words: Capucine, Claudia Cardinale, and Catherine Deneuve. These sultry soubrettes were mute most of the time but when they spoke it was with a mysterious foreign accent.

Europe was definitely having a MBWITW moment. Scandinavia too. Remember Nina Van Pallandt? Frequently touted as the MBWITW, Nina was one half of the folk duo Nina and Frederick. The fact that the most beautiful woman in the world hailed from the out-of-it world of folk music is proof-positive that the MBWITW might be lurking absolutely anywhere.

Enter Shakira Baksh. In 1967, the gorgeous Guyanese partook in the Miss World contest and the most beautiful woman in the (OK, Western) world was finally a woman of colour. She placed third, which was an outrage since it was quite clear to everyone that La Baksh was the MBWITW. Michael Caine agreed. He tracked her down and married her, and they have been together since.

In the ’70s we were deluged with blondes like Margaux Hemingway, Farrah Fawcett, Cheryl Tiegs, and Patti Hansen but nobody was buying it. Black was beautiful, and so was Latin: Diana Ross, Raquel Welch, Beverly Johnson, Pat Cleveland, Iman, and Bianca Jagger were clearly the most beautiful women at Studio 54 and beyond.

When the ’80s rolled around, Studio 54 closed, leaving the field wide open. In swooped lots of TV-star contenders with big shoulder pads, including Linda Gray, Diahann Carroll, Catherine Oxenberg, and Victoria Principal.

My vote for the MBWITW of the ’80s? Nastassja Kinski, star of Tess and One From the Heart. Remember Avedon’s snake photo? Case closed.

In the ’90s we suddenly had beautiful women coming out of our asses: Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss. The most beautiful? Naomi Campbell. And she’s still got it. During the recent fashion week, she appeared on the Diane Von Furstenberg catwalk – it was a dramatic, unexpected, the-bitch-is-back denouement – and put those pale Ukrainian chippies to shame.

Which brings us right up to date: Today those glamazon models have been replaced by the aforementioned dour, flat-chested, catwalkers. As a result our focus has shifted back to those plankton-guzzling movie stars. It is impossible for us, with our red-carpet obsession, to think that the most beautiful woman in the world might be anything other than an A-lister. Which means we are back in the 1950s, minus the decadent sizzle.

I think we can all agree that it’s time to look beyond the red carpet. No disrespect to Gwynnie and her mugwort muffins, but I feel that the real MBWITW is still out there, skipping about in some improbable location, uncrowned and unfeted.

Fashion tips for the festive season

2013 October 21. | Szerző:

With the festivities in the air, it’s time to look and feel glamorous and dress to impress.

Today’s modern woman seeks versatility and innovativeness in design and style. She prefers utilitarian fashion pieces that ride high on the trend quotient and are versatile enough to be dressed up or down- allowing the wearer to express her individuality regardless of the occasion. The color palette is a mix of cheerful vibrant hues like rani pinks, peacock blues and lime green which are perfect for the festive season.

Whether it’s those fun festive evenings, or a walk down the red carpet or even your best friend’s wedding, we tell you how to dress your best!

– Wear outfits in breathable fabrics like georgettes and chiffons that flirt with lace and gotapatti resulting in a sophisticated femininity.

– For an elegant yet edgy festive statement, team up a gorgeous hot pink or lime green raw silk bandi with a flowy gown or a lehenga for a cocktail or mehendi function.

– The bandi can also be paired with a bandhini skirt for a night about town or a Diwali cards party! Comfort and style join hands with a bandi paired with dhoti pants.

– Sashay down the red carpet in a pink brocade gown with a hint of sheen or a cream jacquard print gown complimented with stunning jadau earrings.

– Be a head turner at a wedding with a gorgeous peacock blue net brocade anarkali- a gold clutch and statement earrings complete the look

– Go classic with a gold and cream anarkali with traditional Rajasthani gotapatti work complimented with gold jhumkis making for a very pretty picture for a pre wedding puja ritual or a festive puja- it’s feminine, graceful and naturally alluring!

Hot tip- Festive wear this season is all about timelessness and understated elegance so keep one item in the overall look opulent- and let that be a magnificent statement piece of jewellery.

Selfie? I’d rather go old school in sequinned Marc Jacobs

2013 October 15. | Szerző:

As the narrow-eyed stare of my byline photograph suggests, I have a pathological hatred of having my picture taken. I have the utmost respect for models: I can’t think of anything worse than being subjected to a constant barrage of shutter snaps.

In the 19th century, Native American tribes believed that photography could steal the soul. My fear is more concrete, namely that a bad fashion choice, bad hair day or just a badly timed grimace could be immortalised. The advent of Google image search, Facebook tagging and Instagram means that they’re immortalised and accessible. It’s a phobia I know many other share. Hence the proliferation of the “selfie” – the idea being that you can control your own depiction, and decide if it’s worthy of publishing.

So it was with trepidation that I agreed to have my picture taken by the artist Walter Hugo as part of his latest series of portraits. Hugo uses a giant camera obscura to capture his images the good old-fashioned way, fixing them on plate glass with silver nitrate. He’s installed himself in the basement of Paul Smith’s newly expanded shop on Albemarle Street in London for an exhibition opening tomorrow to run during Frieze Art Fair.

Of course, it brings up a whole host of Dickensian issues. Firstly, there’s no retouching on the plate glass. Secondly, there’s no re-shooting. Both anathema to contemporary fashion photography. Hugo recently shot a series of lookbook images for Smith with the same olde-worlde provisos.

The process is nothing I’ve experienced before: the exposure takes 17 seconds, the opposite of an iPhone snap. There’s a clamp to hold your head in position. And it took me a long time to decide on what to wear. It’s sequined Marc Jacobs. Which may be a foolish seasonal choice as, bar the glass plate’s propensity to smash, Hugo asserts that the image can last for 500 years, much longer than a paper counterpart.

It didn’t get me over that photographic phobia, but interestingly I don’t hate the results. Even though it’s about as far away from an arms-length “selfie” as you can possibly get.
